I stumbled across this book by accident but at the exact right time. It’s weird how life works like that sometimes.
 
I had already read Mel’s book Kick Ass with Mel Robbins which is a book she wrote after The 5 Second Rule. I enjoyed how she shared private coaching sessions between her and everyday people. These people are just like most of us – they want better relationships, they want to be healthier, they want to be more productive. In other words, they want to get unstuck from destructive habits and negative self-talk that are holding them back.
 
Having loved Kick Ass, I knew I’d love The 5 Second Rule also. I didn’t know, however, how much I would gain from the book. The basic message of the book is how you can change your life 5 seconds at a time. Mel explains that there is only a 5-second window between your instinct to do something you should and your ability to act. In those 5 seconds, you can hesitate, worry, and/or have self-doubt; this will result in you not acting.
 
On the other hand, if you use Mel’s simple tool, you can instead act and do what you know you should. You’re probably wondering how this works or what the simple tool is. It’s really this simple: the moment you have an instinct to act on a goal, you must count down 5-4-3-2-1 and physically move or your brain will stop you.
 
I know what you’re thinking: “that sounds crazy.” It does. Even Mel will admit that. But it works!
 
Mel created this method herself when she was in a challenging part of her life, which she explains in her book. After realizing it worked so well, she actually did the research as to WHY it works. She has a law degree and practiced law. She understands how to research and analyze things. And, she has certainly done that with her 5 Second Rule. In the book, she explains this very simple but effective tool and also why it works.

how to change your lifeIn the book, Mel’s first assignment to the readers is to set your alarm clock for 30 minutes before you usually get up. Then, when the alarm goes off, instead of hitting snooze and without even thinking about it, say to yourself “5-4-3-2-1” and then get out of bed.
 
I’ve been doing this for a couple of weeks now and it has made such a huge difference in my life already. I have been spending those extra 30 minutes getting stuff done that I wasn’t finding the time to get to. And, because I’m feeling more accomplished at the beginning of the day, I feel more energized and positive throughout the day. I also feel better about myself because I’m not hitting the snooze button. I’m not procrastinating. I’m getting things done and the resulting sense of accomplishment is energizing me to use the 5 second rule even more.
